Client - Terumo Aortic
Roles - VP Global Marketing
Overview
Terumo Aortic is a class iii device manufacturer involved in surgical grafts for cardiothoracic, abdominal and peripheral applications and hybrid and catheter-based stent graft systems for abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms.
The Role
Reporting to the CCO, the VP Global Marketing would take leadership responsibility of the marketing function (circa 20 heads). While continuing to grow the current Surgical, Endovascular and Hybrid product portfolio globally, the role would also spearhead a move into digital and connected devicespace. The successful candidate would have a strong global marketing background within medical devices, crucially they needed to have tangible exposure to digital health solutions.
Approach & Outcome
TERUMO Aortic engaged RMG to manage the campaign on a Retained Executive Search (headhunting) basis. We had previously supported the company in recruitment of some UK based commercial heads.
This search involved RMG identifying individuals with the relevant experience working for medium sized and corporate device businesses across a range of different therapy areas, proactively approaching them to discuss the role and establish both their interest and most importantly competence in launching new digital technologies.
Within six weeks of signing the contract brief, we delivered a shortlist of six candidates, all of whom had already been interviewed at first stage in person. This was at the start of the 2020 COVID-19 crisis and so positioning a change of role was more of a challenge than usual.
Following a robust three-stage interview process, which involved an external psychometric assessment, an offer was made to the successful candidate. The candidate had a background in sales leadership in devices which had progressed into global marketing roles. Their current role had involved the development and launch of a personal diabetes monitoring app which had over 1million downloads which also linked in with a dashboard that healthcare professionals could use to monitor their progress and advise on early interventions where necessary, avoiding costly hospital admissions.
An offer was tabled and accepted and the candidate started following completion of their notice period with their previous employer.
RMG added value by quickly being able to identify a unique candidate who was a true expert in digital health innovation within medical devices. We advised the client and candidate throughout the process which was nearly all conducted virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. We were delighted to successfully deliver this brief which was undertaken in challenging climate.
“RMG has taken the time to get to know our business and has built up a detailed understanding of organisation and the type of people we need to help drive growth. They are thorough and well connected in the industry. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to other medical device manufacturers who need a recruitment or headhunting partner.” CCO
“I had a long standing relationship with RMG having had interactions with them in the past but was not looking to move role. However once I had discussed the position profile and gone through the process with RMG I decided to move forward. I was eventually successful in securing the role and was particularly impressed with the professionalism that RMG brought to the overall process from preparation through to negotiating the offer.” Candidate
